The Adoption Process

How to adopt?

All pets that are ready for adoption have their very own profile here on our website so please look through the profiles to see if you can find your next new best friend.

Use our 'Pet Match' system to help choose a pet based on things like pet age or activity level and sign up to receive updates on your search by email and text message.

Alternatively you can also come to directly to our Wingfield or Edinburgh North Shelters or the Port Adelaide Pet Adoption Centre (cat adoptions only) anytime between 10am and 3pm, 7 days a week to meet the pets that are ready for adoption. Each animal’s location is displayed on their individual pet profiles.

Once you have met an animal you would like to adopt, you can take them home the same day as all AWL animals are desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and health checked ready for their new home (yes, even the kittens and puppies!)

Adoption prices vary depending on the age and type of animal so please check each pet profile for all the details.

You can place an animal on hold for a 24 hour period for a non refundable fee of $20 once you have been to the AWL and met the animal. This fee is taken off of the adoption price should you choose to adopt.

Please note

  • We do not place a hold on animals over the phone unless you have already been to the AWL to meet the animal.
  • We do not place holds on kittens.

Being a shelter we never know what animals are going to need rehoming before they arrive so it’s best to keep an eye on our website.

Cats are seasonal breeders so they only breed through the warmer months. We usually start to see kittens from around November through to April.

Please complete the pet match and sign up to receive updates on any type of animal you are looking for. You will have the option of getting notification by email and text message.

Being a shelter, the animals we help to rehome come in all shapes, sizes, breeds and personalities. We do get small dogs and when we do, they generally get adopted really quickly. Please complete the pet match and sign up to receive updates on any type of animal you are looking for. You will have the option of getting notification by email and text message.

If you have kids, we recommend for them to meet the dog, cat, puppy, kitten or rabbit before an adoption.

It’s a really good idea to bring your dog down with you so that if you meet a dog that you would like to adopt. They can meet each other on neutral territory and we will have one of our behaviour team there to assist with the dog to dog introduction.

It’s completely up to you, you can bring your dog with you initially or you can come down without your dog first to see if there is anyone here for you. If you find a match you can put the dog/cat on hold for 24 hours so that you can go home and bring your dog back to have their first meeting.

The hold requires a $20 fee but this is taken off of the adoption price if you choose to adopt. If you have kids in the household it’s a good idea to have them meet the dog also.

We do not have a time limit on any of the animals that are available for adoption. They are in our care until we find the right home for them, no matter how long that takes.

All animals are desexed, microchipped, vaccinated and health checked ready for their new home (yes, even the kittens and puppies!).

The adoption fee for an animal helps to cover the costs involved in the services we provide for that animal such as microchipping, desexing, vaccinations, health checks that each animal undergoes before being made available for adoption. The adoption cost is a far lower cost than going to a vet and going through the procedure yourself.
