Volunteer at AWL

COVID-19 Update
If you are unwell please do NOT come to any of our sites, we are sure you understand. Thank you.

AWL receives no direct government funding, so when you donate your time you make our work possible.

Your generosity helps to keep AWL operating cost-effectively, so we can continue to bring people and pets together for the wellbeing of our community.

We couldn't do it without you.

As a volunteer, you play a crucial role in our everyday operations. Quite simply, your dedication and tremendous support is the only way we can keep finding happy homes for lost and abandoned pets. You’re joining a team who also help us raise money, and foster young or sick animals.

If you want to give back to the community, help animals, increase your skills and experience, or make new friends, volunteering at AWL could be for you.

FAQs

  • Anyone can apply for a volunteer role, and we have volunteers from many backgrounds
  • You must be over 18 years old and under 80
  • We ask for a police clearance (less than 12 months old)
  • We'll provide training, orientation and at least one shift following a mentor so you can learn the ropes
  • We prefer you to work regular shifts each week if you can
  • We'll give you an agreement and a job description
  • We'll make sure you know what the job involves, that you're physically capable of doing it safely and check-in with how you're doing
  • We advise you not to work with animals if you're pregnant, to minimise the risk of transmitting diseases

Volunteering with the animals are by far the most popular roles. Please keep an eye on our current vacancies for when opportunities arise.

We are always looking for new foster carers. Puppies and kittens that are too young for adoption, pregnant dogs and cats, malnourished animals and animals recovering from surgery, need a caring home for a short time.

These little ones need a safe place to grow, heal and socialise before they're ready to be adopted into their forever, happy home.

If you could offer your home and your time to be a foster carer, we'd love to hear from you. We provide training and all the food and equipment you need.

Start by filling in this form, and we'll call you to explain more about joining our foster care team.

We train you so you can be confident you know what to do. There'll be an induction when you first start, and we'll make sure you're physically capable of doing it safely and check-in with how you're doing.

You'll be offered more training opportunities throughout the year to help build up your skills and knowledge.

We ask for a commitment of one shift per week for our volunteer roles, due to the training and support we provide.

If you have other commitments, this might not suit you so you could consider becoming a foster carer.

We have a calendar of corporate volunteer days. Please contact Jane Best on 8348 1300, and she'll explain how it can work for you and your employer.

As a not-for-profit organisation, we simply don't have enough staff resources to train you, or complete reporting and assessments, if you're looking for placements or work experience.

If you'd still like to volunteer your time, outside of a formal training or placement program, please fill in an application. We'd love to hear from you.
