Cat adoption

Everything you need to know about adopting your new best feline friend!

Meet the cats! Cat adoption FAQs

Adopting your new cat

So, you’re ready to adopt a cat – how exciting! Here's our guide to help you find the right cat for your home.

Step 1: Consider what you're looking for in your future kitty

Think about the lifestyle and home life you'll be able to offer your new friend. Some things to think about are:

  • How much time will you have to spend with your kitty?
  • Are you looking for an active kitten or relaxed older cat?
  • Does anyone in your home have allergies or other needs to consider?
  • Do you have time for grooming a long-haired cat daily?
  • Do you already have pets and how will you introduce them to your new feline friend?
  • Do you have time to dedicate to training a new kitten?
  • How much space do you have in your home –will your cat have a safe spot to sleep?
  • Will your cat be indoors only, or will they have access to a secure outdoor area, such as a cat run or enclosed backyard?

Step 2: Check out the available cats

Now that you know what type of cat will fit purrfectly into your family, take a look at the profiles of the cats who are currently looking for their furever homes!

Meet the cats!

Step 3: Meet the cat

Before you adopt, you'll need to meet the cat to make sure you hit it off. Take note of where the cat is located on their profile. Once you know which shelter they're at, feel free to visit us. Locations and opening hours of our two shelters are below.

Wingfield Animal Care Centre
1-19 Cormack Road, Wingfield
10 am to 3 pm
Tuesday to Sunday
Edinburgh North Shelter
4 Hewittson Road,
Edinburgh North
10 am to 3 pm
Tuesday to Sunday

Be sure to bring anyone else in the home with you – everyone's got to love their new furbaby as much as you do! If they're the purrfect match and you're ready to take them home, let our team know. You can adopt your newest family member that very same day. How exciting! Otherwise, if you need some time to think about it, prepare your home or bring other family members down, you can place the cat on a 24-hour hold to make sure no one else pounces before you do.

Step 4: Take them home!

It's time for you and your pet to start your new life together. To set you up for success, your new best friend has been desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea-treated and wormed, meaning all you need to worry about is giving them the love they deserve. Best of all, as a thank you for giving a cat in need a second chance at love, you'll receive 10 per cent off everything at our Pet Shop which is stocked up with everything you could possibly need to help them settle in.

Thank you for opening your heart and your home to an animal in need 💙
