Policy and position statements

The way we do things and our stance on animal welfare

AWL's work caring for and impounding animals is governed by the Dog and Cat Management Act.

We have our own stringent internal standards and ways of operating to ensure best practice when we are caring for animals. Their welfare is always at the forefront of our work, and we believe it's important to take a stance on matters affecting companion animals.

Animal Care Policy

The Animal Welfare League of South Australia Incorporated (AWL) will accept into its care and use its best endeavours to rehome all animals that it assesses to be suitable for rehoming where it has the facilities and capabilities to provide care.

In doing so, AWL strives to provide for the needs of all animals in its care by creating the optimal physical and behavioural health, nutrition needs and environmental conditions in reference to the 5 Domains Model (David J Mellor, 2016).

Sale of animals in pet shops

Animal Welfare League of South Australia Inc (AWL) is opposed to the sale of dogs, cats and other companion animals in pet shops other than those sourced from shelters and rescue groups.

AWL strongly supports a compulsory licensing system including mandatory yearly inspections of all pet shops and commercial businesses for the rearing, training, boarding and breeding of dogs and cats.

Responsible companion animal breeding

Animal Welfare League of South Australia Inc. (AWL) believes that the breeding of any dog, cat or other companion animal must match the anticipated demand and ensure that suitable homes will be available for all of the offspring. If this cannot be achieved, the animal must not be bred.

AWL is opposed to the breeding of any animal that is detrimental to the welfare of the animal or the offspring.

Desexing of companion animals

Desexing ensures that companion animals cannot produce unwanted/unplanned litters reducing the number of unwanted companion animals entering shelters and pounds.

Animal Welfare League of South Australia Inc. (AWL) endorses the desexing of all companion animals (cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets.)

AWL believes that other animal species are to be desexed if appropriate for that species. AWL supports early age desexing in a shelter facility, subject to satisfactory health checks.

AWL will ensure all dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets must be desexed prior to transfer or adoption.

AWL supports desexing requirements in the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995.

Intensive companion animal breeding operations (puppy farms)

Animal Welfare League of South Australia Inc. (AWL) is opposed to any breeding operation that does not meet the physical and psychological needs of the dogs, cats or other companion animals housed within.

Euthanasia

Animal Welfare League of South Australia Incorporated (AWL) is of the opinion that all heathy and behaviourally sound companion animals are not to be euthanased.

AWL believes that the decision for euthanasia must not be taken lightly or in haste but is to be done with due consideration of the health and welfare of the individual animal, the risk to society, the wider shelter population and in accordance with State regulations.

Surgical modification

Animal Welfare League of South Australia Inc. (AWL) is opposed to the surgical modification of animals for cosmetic or non-therapeutics purposes.
