Leave a gift in your Will

Leave a lasting footprint

A gift in your Will to AWL is an act of kindness that gives pets a second chance

AWL brings together lost and abandoned pets and caring humans to create happy homes where everyone feels loved.

Every year AWL cares for thousands of sick, injured and homeless cats and dogs. More than half of the pets we care for receive help thanks to gifts in Wills.

These generous gestures provide the lifesaving operations, warmth and shelter to give every animal the second chance they deserve.

AWL gives these pets the food, vet care and medication they need to become healthy and happy, and the behaviour support they need to fit into a new home.

AWL has been here for every dog and cat since 1964, yet we receive no direct government funding. It costs around $7,000 every day to care for the animals in our Animal Care Centre.

As a not-for-profit organisation, we rely on caring individuals like you to provide essential financial support now and in the future.

Please consider leaving a gift to AWL in your Will. You'll leave a lasting footprint by creating happy homes now and in the future.

Make a life-changing gesture

People who remember AWL in their Will fund half of everything we do.

Without your kindness, we wouldn't be able to care for thousands of lost or injured pets or carry out thousands of lifesaving operations and veterinary checks every single year.

Gifts in Wills fund our vital facilities such as our vet clinic, kennels and cat studios. They also help pay for everyday essentials, including warm shelter, food and urgent medical treatment. Plus all the love and care the pets need before we find them a new home.

You should discuss the various types of bequests with your solicitor who can ensure the proper clause is entered into your Will.

You can leave money, a specific gift (such as a property), or the residue of your estate (after family and friends have been provided for).

You can also make a donation to AWL and ask us to accept responsibility to care for your pets following your death.

Lou and Tracy's story

The care and wellbeing of their pets have always been at the forefront of Lou and Tracy's daily life.

Lou said they recently started to think about what would happen to their beloved pets in they weren't able to care for them anymore.

"With AWL's bequest service, we found peace of mind knowing that AWL would take on our animals if we're no longer around", Lou explained.

"We've always been aware of the lack of government support for AWL, so without hesitation, we have named AWL as a beneficiary of our estate. This pledge not only eases our minds not, but we're happy to know that AWL will benefit in the future too," said Lou.

While doing what they feel is best for their pets, their kindness and compassion will leave a lasting footprint. Lou and Tracy will give thousands of unwanted cats, dogs, puppies and kittens a second chance at happiness.

Thank you for considering leaving a gift in your Will to help pets in need.

Your pets and companion animals

AWL can care for pets if owners can no longer care for their animals and are prepared to make a financial donation to AWL.

If you wish for AWL to accept responsibility of the care of your pet following your death, you are required to make provision by way of a bequest and authority for AWL to exercise such care by way of a clause in your Will. This means that your pet becomes the sole responsibility of the AWL.

A suitable suggestion for this type of clause is:

“I wish to give my [describe pet(s)/companion animal(s)] and the sum of [insert amount i.e. $20,000.00] to The Animal Welfare League of South Australia Incorporated of 1-19 Cormack Road Wingfield South Australia (ABN 11 397 137 539) and I express the hope, but without imposing any trust or binding obligation on The Animal Welfare League of South Australia Incorporated of 1-19 Cormack Road Wingfield South Australia (ABN 11 397 137 539) that by accepting this gift that they will look after [describe pet(s)/companion animal(s)].

The receipt of the chief executive officer, treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being is a sufficient discharge to my executors who are not bound to see the application thereof”.

A sum of money

You may wish to give a sum of money to AWL. However, the amount may reduce in value over time. For example, $10,000 may not be worth as much in 20 years’ time. You can include a clause to provide that the sum of money is to be adjusted to reflect the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

A suitable suggestion for this type of clause is:

“I give [insert amount e.g. $10,000.00] to The Animal Welfare League of South Australia Incorporated of 1-19 Cormack Road Wingfield South Australia (ABN 11 397 137 539).

The receipt of the chief executive officer, treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of the Animal Welfare League is a sufficient discharge to my executors in respect of this gift.”

If you wish for the amount to be adjusted to reflect the CPI, you should then include:

“the amount referred to in paragraph [insert paragraph number] is to be adjusted for inflation from the date of this will to the date of my death according to the movement of the CPI between those two dates.”

A specific gift

You may wish to gift a specific item from your estate to AWL. This may include a piece of property, specific shares or a personal item. However, if that asset does not form part of your estate on your death, it cannot be gifted to AWL.

A suitable suggestion for this type of clause is:

“I give [clearly describe the item e.g. my property located at 123 Smith Street, Adelaide in the State of South Australia Certificate of Title Register Book Volume 1234 Folio 567] to The Animal Welfare League of South Australia Incorporated of 1-19 Cormack Road Wingfield South Australia (ABN 11 397 137 539).

The receipt of the chief executive officer, treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of the Animal Welfare League is a sufficient discharge to my executors in respect of this gift.”

Your estate
The Residue of your Estate

Once you have made provision for your family and after payment of your debts, funeral or testamentary expenses, you may wish to gift the whole of the residue of your estate to AWL.

A suitable suggestion for this type of clause is:

“I give the whole of the residue of my estate to The Animal Welfare League of South Australia Incorporated of 1-19 Cormack Road Wingfield South Australia (ABN 11 397 137 539).

The receipt of the chief executive officer, treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of the Animal Welfare League is a sufficient discharge to my executors in respect of this gift”

A Portion of the Residue of your Estate

Once you have made provision for your family and after payment of your debts, funeral or testamentary expenses, you may wish to gift a portion of the residue of your estate to AWL.

A suitable suggestion for this type of clause is:

“I give [insert amount e.g. 50%] of the residue of my estate to The Animal Welfare League of South Australia Incorporated of 1-19 Cormack Road Wingfield South Australia (ABN 11 397 137 539).

The receipt of the chief executive officer, treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of the Animal Welfare League is a sufficient discharge to my executors in respect of this gift.''
