FAQs

General

Is my donation tax-deductible?

Yes, AWL is a registered charity. Donations over $2 are tax-deductible, and you’ll receive a receipt for your records. Please note that any lottery tickets purchased are not tax deductible.

How does AWL maintain my privacy?

We take protecting your personal information seriously and carefully handle all personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) set out in the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988.

Our privacy policy can be found online at https://awl.org.au/privacy.

Our lottery privacy policy can be found online at awl-lottery.com.au/privacy-policy.

Animal Sponsorship

What is animal sponsorship?

Animal sponsorship is a simple way to support AWL with a monthly donation. Your donations provide ongoing care for animals in need, helping with food, shelter, medical treatment and finding forever homes.

How do I set up an animal sponsorship?

You can set up a monthly donation via our website. It’s secure, flexible, and you can change or pause your donation at any time.

Can I change or cancel my animal sponsorship donation?

Yes, you can update, pause, or cancel your regular donation anytime by contacting us. AWL is 100% community funded, so every contribution helps the animals in our care.

Will my donations be monthly?

Yes, all animal sponsorship donations set up on our website will be monthly. If you would like to set up regular donations with a different frequency (e.g. fortnightly, etc) please contact our friendly team on 08 8348 1300

Do/can I sponsor just one animal?

No, your sponsorship will actually be helping lots of lost or abandoned animals that come into our shelter. As soon as we find one animal a loving new home, another will arrive at AWL and your kind support will help provide them with the loving care they need.

Does AWL receive any government funding to care for these animals

No. AWL receives NO government funding, so we rely on donations and sponsorship from compassionate people like you to help care for these animals.

Where does my sponsorship money go?

Your kind sponsorship helps support every sad, lonely and desperate animal who arrives at AWL. Your support helps provide the following:

  • Shelter and a warm bed
  • Nutritious food
  • Toys and enrichment
  • Vital vet care (including vaccinations, medication, and any surgery needed)
  • Love and cuddles until they can find their new home
Will I be the only sponsor of an animal?

Each animal is supported by several kind sponsors. This is because we have more than 100 animals come into our care each week, so we simply couldn’t provide all the food, treatment, and care that each animal needs without the help of a number of generous supporters.

Can I sponsor both cats and dogs?

Your sponsorship will go towards helping all animals at AWL, including cats, dogs and rabbits. As AWL is 100% community funded, they all rely on your love and kindness for a brighter future.

Can I visit my sponsored animal?

Unfortunately not. The animals in our care may be vulnerable or nervous, so to reduce their stress we only allow our trained animal attendants and expert vet team to interact with them. However, we will send you regular updates on the animals you’re sponsoring so you can see firsthand the difference you’re making!

Can I adopt an animal I sponsor?

All animals who are ready to find their forever home will be listed on the website, so if you are looking for a furry new companion you can check out the adoption page.

Will you tell me when an animal I'm sponsoring is rehomed?

Absolutely, we’ll share this in the regular updates you receive. The best part of being a sponsor is knowing your caring support has given a lonely cat or dog the second chance they deserve, and they’ve found a loving new home.

I still have some questions

If you’d like to sponsor a cat or dog but still have questions, please feel free to contact our friendly team on 8348 1300 or email support@awl.org.au

Lottery

Why don’t you post who the winner of each lottery is?

To maintain the privacy of the winner we only post the winning ticket number in The Advertiser and here: awl-lottery.com.au/winners. For more information on AWL’s privacy policy click here: awl-lottery.com.au/privacy-policy

Where does the money for the lottery prize come from?

Each lottery prize is funded through the sale of lottery tickets, which are carefully structured to cover the cost of the prize and raise vital funds for the animals in our care. All of AWL’s lotteries follow South Australian regulations to ensure they’re fair, transparent and sustainable, which means every ticket purchased will help provide food, shelter and love for animals waiting for their forever homes.

Is the order ID your ticket number?

The ticket number is different to the order ID. You’ll receive two emails once you’ve purchased a ticket(s); the first email will have your order ID and confirms your order is being processed, and the second email will have your ticker number(s).

What does being a VIP mean?

‘VIP’ lottery supporters have a monthly direct debit set up to automatically purchase tickets in AWL’s current lottery. VIP’s are automatically entered in every draw without having to remember to buy a ticket, and are also included in an exclusive monthly draw for 100 bonus tickets. VIP’s can cancel at any time.

The car pictured in the ad isn’t on the website

The prize for our lottery is cash or a car of your choice (up to a specific value, which can be found at awl-lottery.com.au for the current lottery). The images you see in our promotions are for display purposes only.

Yes! We work with Aspire Non-Profit Consulting to help run our lottery, which allows us to focus on caring for animals.

Online support

Why do you need my contact details?

We collect your contact details so we can keep in touch about AWL and the animals who need our help. Also, if you’ve signed up to receive something in the post, we’ll need to collect your postage details. We may reach out with more information about how you can support our work.

Your details are always handled securely and respectfully, and you can choose how and when you hear from us. Sharing your information helps us build a community of supporters who care about giving animals the best chance at a loving home.

My stickers haven’t arrived yet

After claiming your free stickers, you will receive a call to confirm your details and then your stickers will be sent in the post. It can sometimes take a few weeks for your stickers to be delivered. If you are concerned that you should’ve received your stickers and they haven’t arrived, feel free to contact our friendly team on 08 8348 1300.

At the moment we’re only doing stickers, so happy to be specific with this one (just feels a little less salesy than the word freebie)

Community

Can AWL bring an animal to my fundraiser?

Our priority is to create a calm and fear-free environment for the animals in our care, so for the safety and wellbeing of the animals in our care we don’t generally bring them to public events or performances.

How can AWL support my fundraising event?

Your support means a lot to us, and we’d love to help you spread the word about your fundraiser! You can access a variety of downloadable resources on our website at fundraising.awl.org.au/fundraise-for-awl/resources, or for more tailored support please reach out to us via supportercare@awl.org.au

Do I need permission to use AWL branding at my fundraising event?

Yes, we ask all fundraisers to use approved materials to protect the integrity of our brand. Contact our friendly team at supoprtercare@awl.org.au and they can provide the resources you need.
