Leave a gift in your Will

Make a promise of devotion to animals in need.

Honour all the furry friends you've loved in your lifetime with a promise of devotion to animals in the future.

A Gift in your Will is a promise that you will make special plans to bring love and happiness to animals and animal lovers searching for the missing piece of their heart.

With you and our wonderful AWL family by their side, every animal who comes through our doors will feel an unwavering compassion that can live forever.

Since 1964 dogs and cats at Animal Welfare League have relied on the kindness of compassionate people like you to provide the essential love and support they need.

Your generosity will give them the second chance they deserve and ensure that your legacy of love lives on through their journey.

Your promise in their time of need will guarantee them a future filled with love and happiness - not just for them, but for the families in need of the same compassion you know and love.

Andy and Tova - memories to last a lifetime

The bond we share with animals is truly a unique one. No one understands this better than Andy, who has devoted the last 10 years of her life to Tova, her Kerry Blue Terrier, and their deep, personal connection. Andy’s work life can be challenging, and at times, heavy on her heart. Spending time with Tova puts things in perspective for her and allows her to focus on the present; a skill we could all stand to learn from our fourlegged friends.

“I love her so much – she is such an important part of my life, when we become trapped by the past and the future, Tova has an incredible way of highlighting the here and now is the only time that’s significant. Animal Welfare League has been a constant and trusted part of my life, I have full confidence and peace of mind their care and devotion matches the standards I afford Tova. I can’t imagine what could happen to pets who don’t have anyone to care for them. I want them all to experience safety, love and a sense of belonging as Tova experiences daily.”

For as long as she can remember, Andy has been around animals. She still remembers her first dog, Rusty the Collie, and she looks back with great fondness upon Mollie the Airedale Terrier. For so many of us, our pets are integral to our lives. Like Andy, we experience true companionship when we open our heart to an animal and many of us want to memorialise that companionship by supporting animals who might still be searching for their Andy.

“The unconditional love a pet gives you is so humbling and powerful and never should be underestimated. They are always there for you, regardless of what occurs in your life, it’s a relationship that is never taken for granted.”

“Leaving a gift in my Will helps the AWL to continue their services - with every animal in their care getting a second chance.” - Andy

Peter and Naomi - lifelong animal lovers

Peter looks back fondly on his childhood, reminiscing about his mother’s devotion to cats in need. There was always at least one cat lounging around the house, so it’s no wonder he developed a deep connection with cats throughout his life – so much so that they are now drawn to one another.

He loves nothing more than curling up on the couch to watch his favourite TV shows with a cat purring on his lap. He’s also turned his workshop into a loving tribute to his favourite animal and his beautiful collection of photos and drawings of cats keep him company as he works.

Naomi’s childhood was similar to Peter’s, but she recounts happy memories of the family dog, Scotty. She smiles as she looks back on cuddling up with her best friend and telling him about her day while he listened attentively.

When Peter and Naomi first met, they bonded over their shared love of animals. Now, 60 years later, they still enjoy spending time together at the local dog park, watching dogs of all shapes and sizes go about their day – running, sniffing, chasing balls and rolling on the ground.

They both believe all pets should be given a chance at a life filled with love and happiness. That’s why, 60
years (and many family pets) on from realising their shared love of animals, Peter and Naomi are proudly leaving a legacy of love that will provide for vulnerable animals long after they’re gone.

"It gives us great comfort to know that through a gift in our Wills, we will continue to celebrate our love of animals for many years to come by helping lost and abandoned animals in need."- Peter and Naomi

Make a promise to your pet after you're gone with the Animal Welfare League Happy Hearts program 💙

As an animal lover, we know you've devoted your life to making sure that pets everywhere have safe and loving homes. You teamed up with other compassionate people to ensure no animal was left behind.

In the same way you care for them, your pet cares for you when you're sick. They pick you up when you're down. They show you unconditional love on good days and bad. If you're concerned about who will care for them when you no longer can, you can rest easy knowing Animal Welfare League will ensure their lives are filled with love for the rest of their days.

Nothing can break the bond you share with your pet and promising them a life after love through the Happy Hearts program will only strengthen it. All we ask is that you show animals in need the same unwavering compassion that you show your own pet by leaving them a gift in your Will.

Our Happy Hearts program accommodates cats, dogs and rabbits. If you would like to make sure your pet has someone to take care of them when you're gone, please contact our friendly team on 8348 1300 or supportercare@awl.org.au.

How to leave a gift to Animal Welfare League in your Will

Leaving a gift in your Will to animals in need is a very personal and important decision
Our Philanthropy Team are here to help you with advice and guidance. Please call 08 8348 1300 or email SupporterCare@awl.org.au.

We have created a step-by-step process approach below to help you plan.

Step 1. Determine the value of your estate

You will need to work out estimates of the value of your assets and debts. The value of your estate – which you can leave to friends, family or charity – is simply your total assets minus your total debts.

Step 2. Determine the people and causes you want to benefit

Think about the people and/or charities you care about most and want to leave gifts to in your Will. Think about whether you want to leave specific items or amounts of money, or a percentage of your estate.

You can also entrust your pets to AWL to ensure their lives stay filled with love after you're gone through our Happy Hearts program.

Step 3. Appoint Executor/s

You will need to appoint an Executor to carry out the terms of your Will. This can be a relative, friend or legal advisor. Please do make sure they understand the requirements before you include their appointment in your Will.

Step 4. Write or update your Will

Now you are ready to get your Will legally written or updated. You can find a Lawyer through the Law Society or you can do it yourself through an online Wills platform such as Willed. If you're including a gift to us, please use our suggested wording as shown further down this page. Make sure you store your Will in a safe place and let your Executor/s have a copy too.

Step 5. Talk to AWL

If you decide to leave a gift to animals in need, please do let us know. This will mean we can plan for the future and ensure your gift gives every animal in our care a second chance. We will also keep you informed about all the exciting things happening at Animal Welfare League.

The types of gifts supporters leave animals in need

Your entire Estate or a percentage

Once you have made a provision for those important to you and after payment of your debts, funeral or testamentary expenses, you may wish to gift a portion of or the entire residue of your estate to the animals at AWL.

A Sum of Money

You may wish to leave a sum of money to the thousands of animals that need love and support every year. To prevent this sum of money losing value, you can also include a clause to ensure the sum of money is adjusted to account for inflation.

A Specific Gift

A specific gift in your will to the animals at AWL may be a specific item from your estate, such as a piece of property, specific shares or a personal item. However, you can only gift an asset if it forms part of your estate at the time of your death.

Your Pets

If you have pets in your life when you pass away or can no longer take care of them due to ill health, rest assured that AWL's Happy Hearts program will match them to a loving home, making sure their lives are filled with love for the rest of their days.

If you would like more information on how the Happy Hearts program works please call 08 8348 1300 or email SupporterCare@awl.org.au and we will send you our Happy Hearts pack with more information on the registration process and how to update your Will to include the correct instructions.
