Breeding practices that place profit ahead of welfare can lead to poor health, behavioural challenges and decreased quality of life. These practices can also cause significant distress for the community who unknowingly and excitedly welcome animals into their homes only to face heart-breaking ongoing health or behavioural issues.
We hope these proposed reforms represent an important step towards a future where companion animals are bred responsibly, treated with greater care, and protected through clear, enforceable standards.
AWL is committed to collaborating with the community, industry and government to continue supporting welfare reforms and advocate for those who can’t advocate for themselves.
We encourage South Australians to read the Government’s proposal and have their say before 13 February 2026. Strong legislation, informed public engagement and shared responsibility are essential to putting animal welfare first and these proposed reforms are an important step in the right direction.
