About the Role
As Chief Animal Services Officer, you will lead AWL’s core animal care services, overseeing our veterinary, shelter, behaviour and foster teams. This executive leadership role is responsible for driving operational excellence, animal welfare outcomes, and high-performing team culture across multiple sites and programs. You will report to the Chief Executive Officer and be a key member of AWL’s senior leadership team.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead animal operations, shelter, fostering and veterinary services across AWL.
· Oversee a large team of staff and volunteers to ensure the health and wellbeing of animals in our care.
· Deliver against strategic goals, operational plans and contractual requirements.
· Develop and manage budgets and operational KPIs for animal services.
· Build strong relationships with government, regulators, local councils and sector partners.
· Ensure compliance with the Animal Welfare Act and Dog and Cat Management Act.
· Champion continuous improvement, innovation, and a collaborative workplace culture.
About You
· Extensive experience in operational leadership, preferably in animal services, healthcare, NFP or similar settings.
· Strong knowledge of animal welfare legislation and best-practice shelter operations.
· Exceptional people leadership skills – coaching, performance management and team development.
· Proven ability to manage complex services, drive change and deliver results.
· Strong financial management and project delivery capabilities.
· Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
